Types of Insulation
There are many insulation options available. Read on to find out more.
Pipe Insulation
Mineral Wool
Mineral wools include rock and slag wools. These are inorganic strands of mineral fibre that are bonded together with the help of organic binders. This type of pipe insulation offers superior thermal insulation performance for mechanical/power. It can process piping systems operating from sub-ambient to 1200°F (650°C). Mineral wools can be used on all pipes and vessels, especially industrial pipe and vessel work that operates at higher temperatures. Available in various shapes and sizes, this product assortment can help you maximize process control and also contributes to reduced operating costs and energy savings.
Fibreglass
Fibreglass is perfect for hot, cold, concealed or exposed piping systems that operate at temperatures of up to 850°F (454°C). It offers consistent performance with reliable insulation values, strength and ease in installation. It is also available in a range of sizes and can be used for thermal and acoustic applications as well.
CalSil
When exceptional strength and durability are required along with low thermal conductivity, calcium silicate products provide a solution. An installation product which is a pre-formed, high temperature, abuse-resistant pipe and block insulation with exceptional structural strength, composed of hydrous calcium silicate for use on systems operating up to 1200°F (650°C). You can explore a large selection of sizes and forms.
Cellular Glass
This is a closed-cell structure made of all-glass, which offers an ultimate combination of properties that works well for piping and equipment above the ground, as well as underground, indoors at operating temperatures from -268°C to +482°C (-450° F to +900°F): It is resistant to water in both liquid and vapour form.
- Non-corrosive
- Non-combustible/non-absorbent of combustible liquids
- Shows resistance to most industrial reagents
- Offers dimensional stability under various temperatures and humidity conditions
- High compressive strength
- Resistant to vermin, microbes and mould
- Fibre, CFC and HCFC-free
Perlite
Stainless steel pipes and vessels are sensitive to stress corrosion cracking. An expanded perlite product offers a solution to this problem as it comes with a built-in corrosion inhibitor. It also provides resistance to water absorption and effectively reduces corrosion to exterior surfaces of pipes, vessels and equipment while providing excellent thermal insulation. Sproule WR-1200® is a pre-formed, high temperature, non-wicking pipe and block insulation composed of expanded perlite uniformly reinforced with a high strength fibre and can be used on systems working on up to 1200°F (649°C). Being inorganic and non-combustible. It meets the physical property requirements of ASTM C610. Produced with a blue visual colour coding, it is identified as asbestos-free. XOX is a distinctive formula and process integral to Sproule WR-1200, which prevents corrosion to exterior surfaces of pipe and equipment, especially stress corrosion cracking of austenitic stainless steel.
Aerogel
Aerogels have the capacity to meet the most challenging requirements spanning the complete service range of temperature from -460°F (-270°C) to 1200°F (650°C). These are flexible and durable industrial insulation products that can be used for a variety of industrial applications, including petrochemical, refineries, and gas processing. They are one of the most effective high-temperature insulation materials available in the industrial market, generally 2-5 times thinner than other similar products. Aerogels offer efficient, durable, and productive performance. Moreover, its water-resistance factor safeguards against corrosion.
Polyisocyanurate (polyurethane)
It can be used for a wide range of thermal insulation applications as it fabricates into sheets, pipe shells and various other shapes. This is a highly reliable, durable, efficient and versatile material and can insulate against temperatures ranging from the extreme cold of -196°C to the intense heat of more than 150°C.
Micro Flex
Large diameter pipe and tank wrap, it is a 2.5 pcf (40.1 kg/m3) density product made from high temperature, semi-rigid fibreglass blanket bonded to a flexible facing. Shipped in roll form, the unique fibre orientation gives Micro-Flex increased compressive strength, and permits close installation on round surfaces without reducing the thickness of insulation resulting in a loss of insulating efficiency.
Thermal Blanket
A high-temperature body soluble fibre that utilizes a unique spinning technology to create a special fibre with superior thermal and mechanical properties. This special fibre is made from a blend of calcium, silica and magnesium having the ability to support maximum short term exposure temperatures up to 1200°C.
Removable Wrap (Snake Wrap)
Designed to be an effective, convenient, removable and weatherproof solution for insulating oilfield pipes, wellheads, vessels and other equipment.
Foil Wrap
Oil insulation products which consist of two layers of bubble material laminated between layers of aluminum foil to provide excellent thermal resistance.
Polyurethane Foam Insulation
Polyurethane foam insulation, often known as spray foam, has the highest R-value and thermal rating, making it the most valuable product on the market.
Fireproofing
We utilize non-hazardous and safe paint that can be sprayed on wood and other combustible items to make your area more fire-resistant. Our fireproofing is code-compliant, and when sprayed over spray foam, it may also offer the necessary protective thermal barrier.
Metal Jacketing
Roll Jacketing
Aluminum - Regular and painted aluminum roll jacketing recommended for use in insulated pipes, tanks and vessels less than 8 ft. in diameter.
Stainless steel - For a variety of industrial, commercial and transportation uses.
Flat Stock
Corrugated sheets - Deep corrugated sheets, available in aluminum, painted aluminum and stainless steel.
Elbows
Elbows - 5° and 90° aluminum and stainless-steel elbows, and aluminum multi-fit elbows.
Fasteners
Fabstraps – Various sizes and thicknesses of stainless steel fabstraps.
Mechanical Pipe Insulation
An insulated pipe helps to lower maintenance costs by preventing downtime due to freezing or overheating. Wet insulation can cause external pipe corrosion as well as freezing in the extreme cold due to the loss of thermal conductivity of the insulation. As a result, replacing and maintaining your damaged insulation is very important. If pipes are not adequately insulated, the extreme weather conditions in Northern Alberta and Northern BC can easily cause them to freeze and break. This raises the danger of employee injury, leakage, downtime and productivity loss on-site. The quality of the product being carried through the pipes is lowered by improperly managed pipe and mechanical system insulation. We cover them with aluminum cladding and attach stainless steel fab straps to protect thermal and acoustic insulation, pipe and mechanical systems.
Commercial Pipe Insulation
When you need to insulate piping, ducts, equipment and HVAC systems for commercial building projects such as schools, warehouses, restaurants, dealerships, and other public facilities, contact Cavalier Construction Corp. Our applications include pipe insulation, acoustical treatment, external duct insulation and equipment insulation. We also offer fireproofing, a type of fire protection system used to seal around openings in a fire-resistant wall or floor assembly to slow the spread of fire and smoke.
